Art and Design

Intent: What are we aiming for?

Our Art & Design curriculum helps children develop confidence, creativity and artistic thinking. Pupils learn practical art skills like drawing, painting and sculpture, alongside knowledge about famous artists and different cultural art styles. They are encouraged to generate ideas, experiment with materials and reflect on their work. The curriculum supports understanding of art as a form of expression and communication. This connects to our values of Creativity (exploring and making original artwork), Openness (sharing ideas and appreciating others’ work), Adventure (trying new techniques and media) and Excellence (developing skilled, thoughtful artists).

Implementation: How is Art & Design taught?

Art lessons are carefully planned so children build skills year by year. Learning is structured around five key areas: generating ideas, using sketchbooks, making artistic work, learning about artists, and evaluating artwork. Children revisit these areas regularly, each time tackling them with more depth. Lessons often include practical, hands-on activities, discussions and opportunities to use digital tools where appropriate. Teachers use clear guidance and support so all pupils — including those who need extra help — can participate confidently. This method supports our values of Creativity(practical exploration), Openness (discussion and reflection), Adventure (trying new materials) and Excellence in artistic growth.

Impact: What do children gain?

As children progress, they become confident art makers and thinkers. They learn to talk about their art and others’ work using appropriate vocabulary, show what they know through creative outcomes, and remember important skills and concepts. Teachers check learning regularly through class conversation, recall activities and assessments built into lessons. Over time, pupils build a strong portfolio of work, improved technical skills and deeper understanding of artistic ideas and cultures. This reflects our values of Excellence (high-quality outcomes), Openness (valuing diverse styles and perspectives), Creativity (original expression) and Adventure (exploring artistic challenges and new ideas).
