Intent
At Hope Community School, we believe mathematics helps children make sense of the world around them and prepares them for everyday life. Our intent is for all children to become confident, fluent and resilient mathematicians who enjoy learning and believe they can succeed. Through mathematics, children learn to reason, problem-solve and think creatively and abstractly. We promote a positive can-do attitude, rooted in our school values of Openness, Creativity, Adventureand Excellence. We want children to see maths as exciting, purposeful and achievable, helping them grow into effective and responsible citizens.
Implementation
Mathematics is taught daily in a stimulating, engaging and contextual way using the concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach. We follow the Hampshire County Council long-term plans alongside the NCETM approach, ensuring learning builds carefully over time and key knowledge is revisited so children develop fluency and deep understanding. Problem-solving and reasoning are central to every lesson, encouraging curiosity and adventure in learning. From Year R to Year 5, the Mastering Number programme supports strong number fluency, giving children the foundations they need to succeed.
Impact
As a result of our maths curriculum, children develop strong number sense, confidence and independence. They can explain their thinking clearly, apply skills to real-life problems and approach challenges with perseverance and creativity. Children leave Hope Community School with a secure understanding of mathematical concepts and a positive attitude towards maths, reflecting our commitment to Excellence. They are well prepared for the next stage of their education and everyday life, equipped with the skills to reason logically, solve problems and embrace new learning with openness and enthusiasm.
